Hypoxic pulmonary vasoconstriction (HPV), also known as the von Euler–Liljestrand mechanism, is a physiological response to alveolar hypoxia which distributes pulmonary capillary blood flow to alveolar areas of high oxygen partial pressure. Impairment of this mechanism may result in hypoxaemia.
