Muho: He describes in that book these discussions about who was the best Zen teacher. In the end, someone says, Sawaki is Sawaki and Uchiyama is Uchiyama. I can imagine that at the time, more than now, people who came to Japan to practice Zen had the idea they needed to get satori and could only do so from an enlightened master.

March 1, 1968, as Jens Olaf Christian Nölke) is a German-born Zen monk who is presently the abbot of Antai-ji, a Japanese Sōtō Zen temple in Shin'onsen in the Mikata District of Japan's Hyōgo Prefecture. Thank you, Mr. Muho, for this interview. Abbot Muho. Muhô was born in Berlin, Germany, in 1968 by the name of Olaf Nölke.
To become the abbot of a contemporary zen temple, Antaiji in Hyogo prefecture, he had to pursue the path of 'just sitting' for many years. It does not get any more bare naked than this..no sky hooks, no promises of redemption, no heaven awaiting and certainly no place to go feel good about your spiritual 'life'. Muho: Technically, it’s not. If you want to quit being a monk, you need your teacher’s seal but also your own seal, plus the seal of a relative. So it’s impossible for a teacher to disrobe a student without his consent (and that of another relative) and it is also impossible for a student to formally disrobe without the consent of the teacher.
Presently, he is the abbot of Antai-ji, a Japanese Soto Zen temple. He has translated works of Dōgen and Kōdō Sawaki, and has authored one book in German and several books in Japanese.. At age 16, Muhō was introduced to zazen by one of his high school teachers and soon had the wish to become a Zen monk.

True, I have been living in a monastic environment for almost all of the last twenty years of my life. But at the same time, I have a family, and that alone contradicts monasticism.

ZEN FOR NOTHING tells of the experiences of Sabine Timoteo from Switzerland, as a "Zen novice" in Antaiji in Autumn, Winter and Spring. In Sōtō Zen, the title "Dai-Osho" is the highest priestly rank in a clear monastic hierarchy. It is only surpassed by "Zenji" which is only applied to Dōgen and Keizan (the founders of the school), and to the current or former abbots of the two head temples of the sect. To supervise training monks, further qualifications are required: Zen for Nothing is a masterly immersion into life at a Japanese Zen monastery over three seasons. Swiss novice Sabine arrives at Antibi and, after a brief welcome, she begins to learn the monastery rules: how to bow, sit in the meditation hall, carry out movements with chopsticks, etc.
